A few weeks ago, I boarded a plane to Chicago at 6 a.m. I had never been to Chicago before.

The Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations was holding a Gala to honor those who put mentorship at a high priority during their communication careers. In essence, my time in Chicago was meant to show me what could be in my future.

It was a lovely event. In fact, I was starstruck. CEOs, key communicators, political activists and successful alumni of my graduate program all gathered at the Union League Club to celebrate achievements made in the name of public relations.

During the cocktail hour, I was able to meet and network with leaders in the industry as well as those just starting out. It struck me that although my career may look different than their's, it was an unique gift to be able to talk with them about a common passion.

The Plank Center and my program department made my attendance possible and I am grateful for the opportunity. This year is all about personal and professional growth for me, and the weekend in Chicago was a jump start for continuing conversations about where I am headed and where I truly want to go.
